A walipini is an earth-sheltered greenhouse, set partly into the ground so the soil around it does much of the work of keeping plants alive through the seasons. Ours is built around passive design. Thick thermal mass soaks up the sun’s heat by day and releases it at night, while the steady temperature of the surrounding earth keeps the interior from swinging too hot or too cold.
Fresh air moves without fans: insulated louvers along the top let warm air escape, and earth tubes buried underground pre-temper incoming air before it reaches the plants. A cold sink at the low point of the space collects the heaviest, coldest air during sudden cold snaps, drawing it away from tender crops.
Inside, the walipini works on two levels. The upper deck is a nursery for seedling starts, including native flowers to plant around the property, vegetables for our outdoor beds, and culinary and medicinal herbs. The lower level is planted directly into the earth, where trees and plants can root deeply in living soil. About a third of the interior is a constructed wetland that treats septic water naturally, turning waste into clean water and lush growth.
The walipini also closes the loop on nutrients. Black soldier flies turn food scraps into protein and rich frass, and worm bins tucked beneath the walkways produce castings for the compost tea that feeds every bed. It’s a working model of how a greenhouse can heat, cool, water and fertilize itself, and a living classroom for anyone who wants to learn how.
